What Is the CP 575?

The CP 575 is an official IRS notice confirming that a business has been assigned an Employer Identification Number (EIN). It serves as proof of EIN issuance and is often requested by banks, lenders, or government agencies for verification. It is not typically required for routine tax filings.

EINsearch.com is not affiliated with the IRS and cannot issue or retrieve official IRS documents like the CP 575 or 147C letters.

What Does the CP 575 Contain?

The CP 575 includes the key details an organization needs to establish its business identity: the nine-digit EIN, the legal business name and mailing address on file, and the date the EIN was assigned. It may also include a list of IRS forms your business may be required to file, such as Form 940, Form 941, and Form 1120, along with the relevant deadlines.

When Do You Receive It?

Applicants who apply online typically receive the CP 575 immediately as a downloadable PDF, while fax or mail applications may take several weeks. After receiving it, keep a copy in your permanent records. The IRS issues the CP 575 only once and does not provide a duplicate, so if you misplace it, the 147C EIN Verification Letter (covered below) serves as the official replacement.

When Do You Need It?

In many cases, all you need to provide is the EIN itself, but the CP 575 proves the number is yours. Banks, lenders, payroll providers, and some state agencies will typically ask to see the letter when you first establish your business identity. Financial institutions and state agencies usually ask for a printed IRS notice rather than just the number, so misplacing the CP 575 can slow down onboarding, lending, or hiring processes.

What Happens If You Lose It?

The CP 575 is issued only once. If you have misplaced it, you cannot request a replacement copy of the same document. Instead, you will need to contact the IRS Business & Specialty Tax Line at 1-800-829-4933 to request a 147C EIN Verification Letter, which serves as the official replacement. A representative will verify your identity, look up your number, and send you the 147C letter, which details your business name, filing address, and EIN. Because the CP 575 can only be issued by the IRS, a third-party service like EINsearch cannot help you retrieve it.

Case Scenario 1: CP 575 Request

A new small business owner applies for an EIN through the IRS website to open a business bank account. Later, when the business applies for a government contract, the contracting agency requests a copy of the CP 575 as proof of EIN assignment. Since this document can only be issued by the IRS, the business must contact the IRS directly if it has been misplaced, not a third-party service like EINsearch.

Case Scenario 2: Annual Vendor TIN and OFAC Verification

A mid-sized corporation prepares its annual 1099 filings for hundreds of vendors and contractors. Before submission, the accounting team uploads a file to a secure FTP provided by the EINsearch team to perform a batch TIN match and EIN lookup, verifying that each vendor’s TIN matches the legal business name on file. The team also conducts OFAC sanctions checks through EINsearch to ensure that none of its vendors or payees appear on federal watchlists. Einsearch’s batch process matches each TIN directly against IRS records, with the database of over 20 million EINs available to enrich or correct any vendor entries that need it. The corporation receives its completed batch in 72 hours or less, streamlining year-end reporting, reducing administrative errors, and supporting full IRS and OFAC compliance.
